There’s an angry young man in my neighborhood. His anger is palpable from a distance, even when he’s not spitting on his father’s car or the police aren’t paying a visit.
I believe there is a way out of his anger, be it meditation, prayer, therapy, opening to Grace or some other conscious path of his choosing.
Does he know this? I wish there was a way to tell him. Certainly I’m not going to, in part because, paradoxically, in order for it to be true he’ll have to believe it to be true. I don’t have a friendship with him that might inspire that kind of belief.
But if he doesn’t come to believe another way is possible, as Billy Joel sings:
he’s never been able to learn from mistakes
So he can’t understand why his heart always breaks …
And he’ll go to the grave as an angry old man
