I first heard about Jean Vanier 20 odd years ago as part of the CBC’s Massey Lecture Series. I was profoundly moved by his work and teaching.
His lecture series, Becoming Human, described his vision and work with people of disabilities. His challenge to the listener throughout his lectures was that our relationship with people with disabilities needs to change. We are missing an important opportunity to become better people. To become more human as it were. As we learn to accept others we in fact learn to accept ourselves, the parts that perhaps we want to keep hidden or are ashamed of.
I’m heartened that Jean Vanier has been award the 2015 Templeton Prize.
